Ankle Sprain and Achilles Pain Physiotherapy

An ankle sprain happens when ligaments stretch or tear, and Achilles tendon pain builds at the back of the heel with repeated load. Both are commonly managed with movement, strengthening and a gradual return to activity. InHealth Physiotherapy in Etobicoke assesses both and builds a plan around your goals.

Ankle sprains

A sprain usually follows a roll or twist of the ankle. Typical signs are pain on the outside of the ankle, swelling, bruising, and trouble putting weight on the foot. A physiotherapist checks which ligaments are involved and whether other structures need attention.

What physiotherapy often includes:

  • Guidance on protecting the ankle in the first days

  • Gentle movement to restore range

  • Strengthening for the calf and the muscles around the ankle

  • Balance and control exercises

  • A staged return to walking, work and sport

  • Repeated sprains can leave an ankle feeling unstable. A plan for strength and balance can help you feel more confident

Achilles tendon pain

The Achilles tendon joins the calf muscle to the heel. Pain is often felt a few centimetres above the heel, with morning stiffness that eases as you warm up and then returns after activity. It can follow a jump in running, a new sport, or changes in footwear.

What physiotherapy often includes:

  • Reviewing your training load, footwear and surface

  • A progressive calf and tendon loading program

  • Mobility work for the ankle and calf

  • Hands-on treatment where it helps
