Plantar Fasciitis Treatment and Heel Pain Physiotherapy

That stabbing pain in your heel — especially with your first steps in the morning — is one of the hallmarks of plantar fasciitis. It is one of the most common causes of heel pain, affecting runners, people who stand for long hours, and those who have recently increased their activity level. It is also very treatable.

At InHealth Physiotherapy in Etobicoke, we offer a range of evidence-supported treatments for plantar fasciitis, including Shockwave Therapy — a non-invasive option with a strong evidence base for persistent cases that haven't responded to stretching or rest alone.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. When it is overloaded or irritated — through a sudden increase in activity, prolonged standing, inadequate footwear, or biomechanical factors like flat feet or high arches — it develops micro-tears and inflammation at its attachment point on the heel.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp heel pain first thing in the morning, or after sitting for a period

  • Pain that eases after a few minutes of walking, then returns with prolonged activity

  • Tenderness on the bottom of the heel when touched

  • Increased pain after exercise rather than during it

How We Treat Plantar Fasciitis

Treatment at InHealth is built around your specific presentation. After a thorough assessment of your foot mechanics, load history, and contributing factors, your physiotherapist will build a plan that may include:

  • Manual therapy — soft tissue release of the plantar fascia, calf, and ankle, and joint mobilization of the foot and ankle

  • Therapeutic exercise — progressive loading of the plantar fascia (intrinsic foot strengthening and calf-strengthening protocols have a strong evidence base for recovery)

  • Shockwave Therapy — see below

  • Taping — short-term off-loading of the plantar fascia to reduce pain while the tissue heals

  • Custom orthotics — when biomechanical factors (flat feet, over-pronation) are contributing, custom stabilizing orthotics can reduce the load on the plantar fascia. InHealth offers custom orthotic fitting.

  • Activity modification guidance — how to manage your training or work load while the tissue heals, so you don't have to stop entirely

Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis?

Shockwave Therapy delivers focused acoustic energy to the affected area, stimulating circulation and the body's natural tissue repair process. It is particularly useful for chronic plantar fasciitis — cases where the tissue has not fully healed despite stretching and rest. Most patients receive a short course of sessions. Side effects are typically mild and temporary (some local soreness after treatment).

InHealth offers in-house shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis, avoiding the need for a referral to a separate facility.

Heel pain that lingers beyond a few weeks is unlikely to resolve on its own without targeted treatment. An assessment at InHealth gives you clarity on what's driving your symptoms and a structured plan to address it.
