Stroke Rehabilitation and Neurological Physiotherapy
Understanding Stroke
Recovery after a stroke or neurological event is possible — and it is most effective when it starts early and is guided by a physiotherapist with specific training in neurological rehabilitation. At InHealth Physiotherapy in Etobicoke, our neurological rehabilitation team brings deep clinical expertise in stroke rehabilitation, vestibular physiotherapy, concussion management, and neurological recovery.
Who This Service Is For
Neurological physiotherapy at InHealth is appropriate for people recovering from or living with:
-
Stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic) — at any stage of recovery
-
Concussion and post-concussion syndrome
-
Vestibular disorders — dizziness, vertigo, and balance impairment
-
Acquired brain injury
-
Neurological conditions affecting movement, coordination, or balance
-
Orthopedic conditions with a neurological component
Whether you are newly discharged from hospital, months into recovery and feeling stuck, or managing a long-standing neurological condition, assessment can identify where you are and what progress may be possible.
What Makes Neurological Physiotherapy Different?
Neurological physiotherapy is distinct from general musculoskeletal physiotherapy. The nervous system recovers through a principle called neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to reorganize itself and form new pathways in response to focused, repetitive, and meaningful practice. Treatment is designed around this principle.
Our approach draws on evidence-supported neurological rehabilitation techniques, including:
-
Task-specific training — repeated, goal-directed practice of movements that matter to you (walking, reaching, transfers)
-
Gait retraining — improving the safety, efficiency, and quality of walking after stroke or injury
-
Balance and fall-prevention work — addressing the vestibular and proprioceptive systems that govern stability
-
Vestibular rehabilitation — for vertigo, dizziness, and inner-ear balance disorders
-
Concussion rehabilitation — a structured, staged return-to-activity program for concussion recovery
-
Upper limb rehabilitation — retraining arm and hand function after neurological injury
-
Fatigue management and energy conservation — common and often underaddressed in neurological recovery
What to Expect
Your initial appointment begins with a detailed neurological and functional assessment — reviewing your medical history, current functional status, movement quality, balance, and specific goals. This assessment typically runs 45–60 minutes.
From there, your physiotherapist builds a rehabilitation plan focused on the areas that matter most to your daily life. Follow-up sessions run 30–45 minutes and are adjusted as you progress. Family members and caregivers are welcome to attend sessions when it is helpful.
No doctor's referral is required to book, though some insurance plans may request documentation for reimbursement.
