If you have been injured at work and you need physiotherapy, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) can cover your treatment in full, with no out-of-pocket cost to you. InHealth Physiotherapy in Etobicoke is a WSIB-approved provider, which means we bill WSIB directly and you pay nothing at your appointment.

This article explains how WSIB physiotherapy works in Ontario, how to start a claim, what your rights are as an injured worker, and what to expect from your first appointment.

Does WSIB Cover Physiotherapy in Ontario?

Yes- physiotherapy is a covered treatment under WSIB for most workplace injuries, provided your claim has been approved.

WSIB covers physiotherapy when:

  • You have a valid WSIB claim number (your employer files this after a workplace injury, or you can file directly with WSIB)

  • Your claim has been accepted and physiotherapy has been approved as part of your treatment

  • You attend a WSIB-approved physiotherapy provider (InHealth is an approved provider)

The coverage is comprehensive: WSIB pays the clinic directly for your physiotherapy sessions at the WSIB rate, and injured workers are not charged co-payments, session fees, or administrative costs. For workers who qualify, this is one of the most accessible forms of physiotherapy coverage in Ontario.

Common Workplace Injuries That Physiotherapy Treats

Physiotherapy is appropriate for a wide range of work-related injuries. The most common WSIB-covered conditions treated at InHealth include:

Musculoskeletal injuries- the largest category of WSIB claims:

  • Lumbar (lower back) strain from lifting, repetitive bending, or awkward posture

  • Cervical (neck) strain from falls, collisions, or sustained posture at a workstation

  • Rotator cuff tears and shoulder injuries from overhead work or lifting (rotator cuff physiotherapy)

  • Back pain from manual handling and repetitive tasks

  • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow) from repetitive forearm or grip activities

Repetitive strain injuries (RSI):

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive hand and wrist movements

  • Shoulder tendinopathy from overhead or repetitive reaching

  • De Quervain's tenosynovitis from repetitive thumb and wrist use

Traumatic injuries:

  • Fractures and post-surgical rehabilitation (once cleared for physiotherapy)

  • Knee injuries from falls, twisting, or impact

  • Hip pain following falls or direct trauma

How to Start a WSIB Physiotherapy Claim: Step by Step

Step 1 — Report your injury Report your injury to your employer as soon as possible. Your employer is required by law to report workplace injuries to WSIB within three business days of learning about the injury. You can also report directly to WSIB yourself by calling 1-800-387-0750 or filing online at wsib.ca.

Step 2 — WSIB opens your claim WSIB assigns a claim number and a case manager to your file. Your case manager is your primary contact throughout your claim.

Step 3 — Physiotherapy is approved For most soft tissue injuries, WSIB automatically approves physiotherapy as part of the Musculoskeletal Programme of Care (MSK POC — explained below). Your case manager confirms the approval.

Step 4 — Book your appointment Contact InHealth with your WSIB claim number. Our administrative team confirms your claim status with WSIB and books your first appointment. You do not pay anything at the clinic — WSIB is billed directly.

Step 5 — Attend and engage with treatment Attend your physiotherapy sessions and follow your home programme. WSIB expects active participation in your rehabilitation as a condition of ongoing coverage.

Do You Need a Doctor's Referral for WSIB Physiotherapy?

No. You do not need a physician's referral to begin WSIB physiotherapy.

What you do need:

  • A valid WSIB claim number

  • Confirmation from your WSIB case manager that physiotherapy has been approved under your claim

Once those are in place, you can book directly with an approved physiotherapy provider such as InHealth. Your physiotherapist will complete the required WSIB documentation (progress reports, functional status updates) and submit them to WSIB directly throughout your treatment.

What Happens at Your First WSIB Physiotherapy Appointment

Comprehensive assessment: Your physiotherapist takes a thorough history of your workplace injury -how it happened, what structures are affected, what your symptoms are, and how the injury is affecting your ability to work and function. A physical examination follows, assessing range of motion, strength, neurological function, and pain behaviour.

WSIB-specific functional assessment: Your physiotherapist assesses your functional status in relation to your job demands, what your job requires physically, and how far your current capacity falls from those demands. This forms the baseline for your return-to-work planning.

Treatment plan: You leave your first appointment with a clear explanation of your diagnosis, a treatment plan with a realistic timeline, a home exercise programme, and an understanding of what your physiotherapy course will involve.

The WSIB Musculoskeletal Programme of Care (MSK POC)

The MSK POC is WSIB's structured framework for treating soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains, and related musculoskeletal conditions). It provides up to 8 weeks of funded physiotherapy and is designed around a goal-oriented, return-to-work focus.

Key features of the MSK POC:

  • Treatment is evidence-based and goal-directed, not open-ended

  • Progress is assessed at defined checkpoints (week 2 and week 6), with updated functional status reports submitted to WSIB

  • The programme emphasizes active rehabilitation — exercise, functional training, and home programme adherence — over passive modalities alone

  • If your injury is more complex or does not resolve within the MSK POC timeframe, your physiotherapist can request additional treatment through WSIB

For most soft tissue workplace injuries, the MSK POC framework provides sufficient physiotherapy to achieve a meaningful recovery and return to work.

Your Rights as an Injured Worker: Choosing Your Own Physiotherapy Clinic

This is one of the most important things injured workers in Ontario do not know: you have the right to choose your own WSIB-approved physiotherapy provider.

Your employer cannot direct you to a specific clinic. Your employer's insurer cannot require you to use a clinic they prefer. You choose where you receive your physiotherapy and that choice belongs to you, not to your employer, your workplace, or your WSIB case manager.

If you live or work in Etobicoke, InHealth Physiotherapy is a convenient, WSIB-approved option with practitioners experienced in treating workplace injuries. You can call us directly with your claim number and we will handle the administrative steps with WSIB.

Return-to-Work Planning: How Physiotherapy Coordinates with Your WSIB Case Manager

A central goal of WSIB physiotherapy and the framework that governs the MSK POC is safe, sustainable return to work. This does not mean rushing you back before you are ready. It means working systematically toward the functional capacity your job requires, with documented progress that supports your case.

Your physiotherapist at InHealth:

  • Assesses your physical capacity against your job demands from the first appointment

  • Sets short-term and medium-term functional goals tied to your return-to-work timeline

  • Communicates progress to your WSIB case manager through regular functional status reports

  • Can recommend modified duty or graduated return-to-work arrangements when a full-duty return is not yet appropriate

  • Works with your case manager if complications arise — for example, if a more complex diagnosis emerges, or if you need referral for imaging or specialist assessment

Physiotherapy and your WSIB case manager operate in parallel, not in silos. The more clearly your physiotherapist documents your functional progress, the better positioned your case manager is to support your claim appropriately.

A Note on Filing Timelines

Injured workers in Ontario have up to 6 months from the date of injury to file a WSIB claim. Filing as soon as possible after an injury is strongly recommended — delays can complicate claim approval and may affect your coverage.

If you are uncertain whether your injury qualifies as a workplace injury, or whether your condition is WSIB-eligible, call WSIB directly at 1-800-387-0750 or speak with a physiotherapist at InHealth who can help you understand the process.
